HD2 Smooth Jazz

I am lucky enough to program our HD2 Channel Smooth Jazz for the Entercom stations across the country and it amazes me that this awesome format is non sellable? Please, it’s the most office friendly format in the world. It’s non intrusive, extremely entertaining, tempo driven and with just the right amount of vocal releases, it’s pleasant to keep on in ANY office atmosphere. Why is it that terrestrial Smooth Stations are flipping formats to something other than Smooth Jazz? Why can’t these stations, thrive and survive? I’m as perplexed as the next guy/gal Sales forces should be able to sell this with no problem. What am I missing?
In a world with PPM (People Meter for those outside of the biz), I would think that it would be a given, marketed correctly and in citys like Kansas City, Home of Jazz great Charlie Parker and we have an entire district in Kansas City devoted to Jazz and it’s culture (18th & Vine) I find it appalling that a city of this market (#32) cannot have and maintain a solid Smooth Jazz station that makes money, gives our listener base the jazz they crave and entertain office complexes across the metro. You can certainly listen to our HD2 channel here in KC and across the country providing you HAVE an HD radio and know where to listen.
At CES this year HD Radio will try again to make a splash,, let’s hope it’ makes it’s mark and we can get more people to listen, and invest in a format I’m very passionate about.

I Lost Steely Dan

Somewhere between 1980 and 1993 I lost Steely Dan, but wait they were never really lost, they just took a break from each other. Fagen and Becker decided they had had enough of the touring, recording, touring, eating, touring, recording and I could go on and on but… Now they are back on tour, and after reading the article in today (7/31) USAToday about how they’re recreating entire albums in their new tour, I almost wish I had the funds to follow them as not a Groupie, but as a true connessouier of their music.

It mesmerized me as a young weed smokin kid of the 70′s and 80′s and their jazz infused classics “Aja” and “The Royal Scam” are mainstays in the in my vinyl library. You can learn alot about how we “image” radio just by listening to these guys make incredible music. If you are any where close to Chicago, LA, or NY you really must make it a point to see them live, your life will be better for it.
