Ok, as programmers we all know that well let’s face it Remotes suck, oh sure they’re great for prize pig chotchky fairies and they’re oh so much fun to listen to when broadcast via phone line, but there is a way to make it sound bigger, better and clearer.

My good friend Shotgun Jaxon (real name Revolver Smith) brought this to us a couple of years back, I blogged about it, but it’s well worth repeating. If you’re using an antiquated Marti system, I feel for ya, If you’re using the old “bag” cell phone for remotes, shame on you.

But never fear, we have a solution or two. This is what you’re going to need

1. A laptop computer (preferably a Sony or a Dell) but any will do, with at least 2 gig of ram (ram is cheap, cowboy up and buy some) with you favorite audio editor, AUDITION, Sound Forge, Audacity, Garage Band )TRADE IT OUT

2. A cell phone provider that will set you up with a USB modem 4 G connection (or something comparable) TRADE IT OUT

3. Zoom HD2 or HD3 digital recorder/mic (or something that you can plug into your USB hub, we prefer the Zoom) last check $119.95 at Amazon.com

4. A Gmail account ( or one that will allow you the flexibility to access it very quickly) FREE

When you’re on location with your nifty tent, card table, chochky bag o stuff, set up your laptop, plug the Zoom in and record your breaks into your favorite audio editing software program at 128kps Mono @41K (or 48K), save this audio on your desktop, open up your gmail account and send it to yourself.

Your board op, opens the same gmail account, downloads the audio to the desktop in the studio (or in our case we use VoxPro and record the audio into it for playback), when it’s time for the remote break, your board op double clicks the mp3 file, drops a music bed in the cue deck and plays back your remote break, it sounds AWESOME, no breakup, no phone feed, sounds just like they’re in the studio with your client looking and sounding great. You get the option of self editing your remote so it sounds the very best it can possibly be while still sounding local and ALIVE.

Your Welcome

Ok, so I am not the defacto expert on anything, but I do know a little about mixing. I often get asked by clients who are trying to do quite frankly the impossible, they are trying (themselves) to either pull music or voice off of video or add music or voice to video using products that are not made for those applications. I am using two different versions of Audition 1.5 and 3.0. The 3.0 version will allow me to both remove audio and add audio to video files. I really want to tell them to “step away from the app slowly” and let a pro create or modify their projects. It will cost them less than they expected and more importantly it will be done right the first time. Something to think about isn’t it? I’d love to know what you think, or if you have a better tip, please share it so everyone can benefit.

What? Yes, you can create awesome imaging for remotes,, But, if you still use the antiquated Marti broadcast equipment, You really should invest in a couple of things and jump into the 21st Century.. Seriously, I talked to a guy the other day who is in a small market and does on average 3 to 4 remotes a week from all over the countryside. So here’s what you need to invest some of your 2009 budget in.

A. A laptop with Windows XP (if you can) and then get Adobe Audition or your favorite audio daw editor (Soundforge, etc)

B. A great USB Powered Mic or ZOOM H2 or H3 Digital Recorder

C. A wireless broadband card.

Your record your breaks, edit them down to the timed length you need and have a 30 or 40 music beds from your prod library already loaded in the laptop, mix it down and email it to yourself via gmail or some other email program. Your board op then opens the same email program at the station and plays it back. The quality is incredible, it will sound like your right there with no drop off, hiss, or any other drop outs that we all have expericenced with Martis Trust me!!, your clients will like it, you’ll like it and it will make you more money in the long run. Questions, just ask me and I’ll be more than happy to help
