The Rite of Growing Up

Author: slarson | Filed under: Voice Over

So, I’ve become fascinated, allright addicted to FB, it’s like we took it over from the teenagers. I’ve connected with people I haven’t seen nor heard from in well over ## years (You didn’t really think I’d tell you how many did you?).

But as I cruise through the posts made from my old friends, I’ve come to the realization that we’ve really grown up. Although some still dwell in the past, that’s alright because that’s who they are and they don’t really know what the rest of the world is like because they never left the world we couldn’t wait to get out of.
Case in point, I have an dear old friend who still lives in the same small town we went to in high school. Not that there’s anything wrong with that, but it is like she is still stuck in 79′. I left that arena a long time ago and this summer I have the opportunity to re-visit that time period with some old friends, discuss life, liberty and our relentless pursuit of happiness. I can’t wait

Spring!

Author: slarson | Filed under: Voice Over

Wow, I can’t believe how fast time has flown by!. Time to think about how in the next ratings period you are going to make your stations imaging shine.
Get new testimonials for at-work listening right in your stations account executives cubicles. Send them a memo with what you want them to say and then have them call your voice mail and leave the audio there, retrieve it and you’re ready.
Gotta sports franchise in your city, opening day baseball is just days away, perfect opportunity to connect with your core P1′s and 2′s so grab your digital recorder and go see the game. My favorite part about this plan is I get to see the game, and I can walk through the stands and get the responses I need from even fringe P3′s.
Think Spring, clean up and refresh! Your cume will bloom and your TSL will excel!. (sorry for the puns :-)

Is the client always right?

Author: slarson | Filed under: Voice Over

Of course they are but there is a point where you may need to draw a line in the sand. You certainly don’t want to lose your client especially in this economic climate, but when the client is leaning toward using another source to sell their product then something needs to be done.

Tact is crucial here.

Perhaps your client has just had a bad day, or maybe worse, been told they have to cut costs. If you are going to be given the “ax”, negotiate, negotiate, negotiate. Don’t risk losing the client over a few dollars, in this era of economic hardships, if you have to take a slight cut, do so, but don’t compromise the integrity of your talent and don’t cut your own throat. Be firm, but fair when re-negotiating your fees. What is YOUR bottom dollar?

Shot throught the heart

Ok, we’re getting down to about a week before Hallmark gets another stimulus shot with Valentines day. A great way to image for the day (on Saturday this year) is to find the 10 Greatest Romantic Movies of all time, and pull the audio from the movies that impacts the station best, front it with your station voice, make it funny, make it risque’, make it your own. But have fun with it, I’m going to use the movie drops as wrap arounds to songs from the soundtracks that best fit my stations target demo.
Grab your digital recorder and get some audio at your favorite flower shop, candy store and gift shop. Happy St. Valentines day and just remember Arbor Day, Presidents Day and St Pats are just around the corner…

Over use of holiday

Author: slarson | Filed under: Voice Over

Ok, so it’s just about the end of January, I haven’t gotten my W2′s (W9′s either) and already I’m being deluged with Valentines Day ads/imaging.  Anymore this holiday in particular irritates the heck out of me. We might as well be imaging Arbor Day, Handkerchief Day and Kiss A Farm Implement Day too.

You buy chocolates, flowers, even nice jewelry for your sweetheart and yet, the chocolate gets tossed, the flowers die and the jewelry is taken back and that money is used to pay off some debt you’ve incurred over the last year. So really the best Valentines gift ever, imo is a Hallmark and a handwritten note or poem. That may be the best gift ever.

But back to imaging and producing it.. Every year I try and find new audio or new ways to tell the listener how much “I Love You” and every year it becomes more and more of a challenge. This year is no different.  Look for audio in the places you least expect it.. Grocery stores and Gas stations.. More roses and chocolate are bought in these two locations than most, (mostly men but a few women too), but a great source for imaging audio and great for drops inside your station promos.

Immersing the message

Author: slarson | Filed under: Voice Over

I was reading an article in MediaPost about immersing web code in video [mediapost.com] and I found this facinating!

Now how can we immerse what we do as imaging producers to fully engage the radio listener to visit our stations sites and click throughs.
It now gives new meaning to TSL (Time Spent Looking). If we harness the power of our brand and image it to reflect the relevance of our stations web sites to our listeners everyday lives and we as programmers and developers can further help them with their day to day routines, and I believe we’re all the better for it. It will help us keep P1′s, develop our P2′s and gather the fringe P3′s. How do you help better your brand? I’d love to know

New Audio !!

Author: slarson | Filed under: imaging

What a a day in our world! I mean the broadcast/production world. I have so much new stuff to look through so many out of context drops to edit from the new president and his vice.. For us in the imaging world its a bonanza, for those in the production world, it can be a post production nightmare with quality and clarity as most of the new audio is being recorded on cell phones and cheap digital knockoffs that obliterate the audio. We can fix it

I’m watching a fantastic documentary on Dr.King on History Channel. I was only a child when Dr. King changed the world, but my parents believed in equality, taught us to never be bigots, treat everyone equally, respect everyone regardless of the color of their skin. That
is what makes this country a great nation, regardless of your political views, Tomorrow history will be made again and we will move into a different direction. I can only hope for the better.
